Diversity and Ecology of Fungal Endophytes in Tropical Forests

چکیده

Fungal endophytes, ubiquitous among terrestrial plants, are especially abundant and diverse in asymptomatic foliage of tropical trees and shrubs_ As such, tropical endophytes are wjdely thought to comprise an important component of fl.!ngalbiodiversity at a global scale. Yet, neither the diversity of endophytes associated with even a single individual plant, nor the potential importance of host preference and spatial heterogeneity to estimates of endophyte diversity has been addressed in full. Here, several salient questions regarding both endophyte diversity itseif, along with the Implications of Ejndophyterichness for plant ecology and evolution have been explored in the.context of tropical forests. Contributions of recent studies in diverse tropical sites have been highlighted in conjunction wjth an overview of future directions in endophyte research. <.< .

Diversity and host range of foliar fungal endophytes: are tropical leaves biodiversity hotspots?

Fungal endophytes are found in asymptomatic photosynthetic tissues of all major lineages of land plants. The ubiquity of these cryptic symbionts is clear, but the scale of their diversity, host range, and geographic distributions are unknown. To explore the putative hyperdiversity of tropical leaf endophytes, we compared endophyte communities along a broad latitudinal gradient from the Canadian...

Diversity, host affinity, and distribution of seed-infecting fungi: a case study with Cecropia.

Recruitment limitation has been proposed as an important mechanism contributing to the maintenance of tropical tree diversity. For pioneer species, infection by fungi significantly reduces seed survival in soil, potentially influencing both recruitment success and adult distributions. We examined fresh seeds of four sympatric Cecropia species for evidence of fungal infection, buried seeds for f...

Fungal endophytes in neotropical trees: Abundance, diversity, and ecological implications

Although fungi comprise only ca. 72,000described species, many authors rank them among hyperdiversetaxa, comparing fungi with nematodes, mites and insects in terms of global species richness (Cqlwell and Coddington, 1994;Hawksworth et al., 1995).However, the true scale of fungal diversity is a matter of open debate, with estimates ranging from hundreds of thousands of species (Aptroot, 1997)to ...

Culturing and direct PCR suggest prevalent host generalism among diverse fungal endophytes of tropical forest grasses.

Most studies examining endophytic fungi associated with grasses (Poaceae) have focused on agronomically important species in managed ecosystems or on wild grasses in subtropical, temperate and boreal grasslands. However grasses first arose in tropical forests, where they remain a significant and diverse component of understory and forest-edge communities. To provide a broader context for unders...

SPECIAL FEATURE Fungal Symbionts of Tropical Trees

The lush green vegetation of moist tropical forest is not what it appears. Dissolve away all the plant matter from the dense foliage, giant buttressed trunks, tangled lianas, and sinuous roots, and a ghostly fungal shadow of the forest will remain. These fungi—diverse symbionts that include mutualists, commensals, and parasites—play critical roles in the dynamics, diversity, structure, and func...
